Oakland Unity High School: A Brief History of an Exemplary Charter School.

2003

Unity opened for its first cohort of 100 9th and 10th graders.

2006

Unity is awarded the Certified Charter School status by the California Charter Schools Association.

2006

Unity received accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) for a six-year term (with a mid-term review).

2006

First graduating class had a 94% graduation rate with 65% accepted to four-year universities/colleges.

2006

Unity received commendation from the California Charter Schools Association for its improvement in Academic Performance Index scores, increasing from 565 in 2004 to 580 in 2005 and 654 in 2006.

2007

Unity conducted its first admissions lottery due to high demand for entrance to its 2007-08 9th grade class.

2007

Oakland Unified School District renewed Unity’s charter for a five-year term.

2007

65% of Unity’s second graduating class was accepted to four-year universities/colleges.

2008

70% of Unity’s third graduating class was accepted to four-year universities/colleges with one-third gaining acceptance to UC campuses.

2008

Unity’s average daily attendance has exceeded 96% during the last five school years.

2008

Unity is selected by the California Department of Education to receive Proposition 1D funding to develop a new school facility.

2008

California Department of Education reported Unity’s 1-year dropout rate at 3.0% and 3-year rate at 17.4%, significantly better than California’s statewide rate of 6.4% and 24.2% and Oakland public schools’ district rates of 11.1% and 37.4%.

2009

75% of Unity’s fourth graduating class was accepted to four-year universities/colleges.

2009

79% of 10th graders passed English portion of CAHSEE, compared to 60% in district.

2009

82% of 10th graders passed Math portion of CAHSEE, compared to 62% in district.

2010

Members of Unity's first class will be graduating from universities such as UC Santa Cruz, Mills College, the University of San Francisco, and San Jose State.

Unity’s attendance has exceeded 96% during the past six school years.
