William Nee

English Teacher / Advisor to the Class of 2014

William Nee

I grew up in Ithaca, New York, in the snow country of the Finger Lakes, and received my BA in History from Harvard, after moving through Biology, English, and Visual Arts. In the summers, I worked in restaurant kitchens in Cape Cod and Ithaca as a dish washer, prep cook, and finally as a line cook in a gourmet pizza restaurant. After college, I moved into the much more boring fields of software and real-estate, until I became a teacher in 2006.

I fell in love with teaching the moment I walked in the classroom door, despite or perhaps because of the fact that the class had been taught by rotating substitutes for five weeks and was literally crawling up the walls and out the windows. I worked at Concord High School for four years, and eventually became the head coach for the Boy’s and Girl’s Tennis teams, and last year my #1 player made it to the DVAL Girl’s final. I also coached a boxing club and a video-game creation club called Power/Reset.

As much as I came to love Concord, I always had the dream of working in an urban school in Oakland, and so I am very excited to be joining the staff of Unity this year. I believe strongly in the ability of words to empower people, and in the power of speech and writing to transform the world. Let’s go transform Oakland!
