Our program works by matching high school students from around California with Stanford undergraduate students, who provide completely free college admissions counseling.  Our mentors help students form college lists, prepare for the SAT, fill out applications, write essays, and find scholarships and other resources.  But perhaps, the greatest things our mentors are able to provide are encouragement, support, and guidance throughout the entire process.  Many of our mentors come from backgrounds that are very similar to our students which allows them to truly understand where their mentees are coming from.
Over the last four years we have the pleasure to work with over 600 high school students.  We have enjoyed incredible levels of success, placing 100% of our mentees into four-year colleges including schools such as Harvard, Stanford, MIT, UCLA and UC Berkeley.  Additionally, many of our mentees have won major scholarships including Gates Millennium, Coke-Cola, Ron Brown, and Questbridge.
Our organization focuses on working with students from underserved communities around California.  Students must fit into two of the following three categories: low-income, minority, or first-generation in order to be eligible for our program.  Apart from that the only other requirements are being a high school junior, and having a GPA of at least a 2.7 – that being said we seek students with wide ranges of academic achievement, from those struggling to get into college at all to those applying to Ivy League schools.
We have just opened the application for the upcoming year, so we are hoping to spread the word about our program so that we can continue to serve as many students as possible.  You can find the application online at http://phoenixscholars.org/2012/04/09/the-2013-2014-phoenix-scholar-application-is-now-open/
