Quarter One Progress Report parent notice

Dear Oakland Unity High School parent / guardian:

We have successfully reached the end of Quarter 1, and the year is off to a strong start. Our students are as focused as ever, and the school environment has been peaceful with few problems reported. Please take a moment to read these important updates regarding events at the school.

Quarter One progress reports –
You will find a copy of the student Quarter One progress report included in this mailing. Please take the time to review it and discuss your student’s progress with them. If you have questions about grades, please call or visit the school so we can arrange a meeting with school staff.

2009 STAR Results –
You will find a 2009 STAR students report for all current 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. Test scores at Unity have improved over the past two years. Here is a summary of our STAR API:

2007 – 595
2008 – 624 (growth of 29 points)
2009 – 677 (growth of 53 points!)

The statewide goal is 800 for all schools. Oakland Unity High School is currently ranked 9 out of 30 OUSD high schools (both charter and non-charter). We hope to continue this trend this school year, and have begun to implement benchmark exams at the end of every quarter and just prior to STAR (May). These exams will help Unity teachers and students to identify our students strengths and areas for improvement in English, Science, Mathematics, and History classes. We know that our students can excel on these exams, and we appreciate the support of our parents and community members.

School Lunch Program (Revolution Foods) –
Oakland Unity High School is currently serving both free and reduced lunch to 85% of it’s students. Due to this increase in lunches served, we have recently increased our lunch orders so that all students have the opportunity to eat a healthy school lunch. Revolution Foods comes to speak with students every few weeks, and if you are interested in giving some feedback regarding the lunch program, please contact Maria Valencia, and we can arrange a meeting with Revolution Foods. We have enclosed the November edition of Family’s Corner from Revolution Foods (English and Spanish).

Student Support Plan meetings –
I would like to thank all parent/guardian that have come in to support your students during Fall SSP meetings. These meetings are organized by student advisors to bring students, teachers, and parent/guardians together to figure out how to best support struggling students. Thank you for your participation.

Swine Flu –
While Unity has had no reported cases of the H1N1 virus, we would like to provide some basic precaution information from the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The flyer is included with this mailing. Please read it and review it with your student.

College Tours –
College Tours have begun for the 2009-2010 school year. Unity juniors have visited UC Merced and CSU Stanislaus. They will also visit Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Santa Barbara in late November. Unity seniors have already visited UC Merced, CSU Stanislaus, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and UC Santa Barbara. We are also planning upcoming College Tours for our 9th and 10th grade students. College Tours are an important component of creating a college going culture for our students. Unity has many alumni attending these schools as well, and we visit them whenever we can.
School Calendar –
Please review the enclosed copy of the 2009-2010 school calendar. There are no changes to it, and we decided to include it at the request of several parents. Please review it and refer to it when making plans for family vacations. It is critical that students have excellent attendance, and we appreciate families planning trips outside of school days.

Powerschool –
All Oakland Unity High School students have access to view their grades using Powerschool. If you have an internet connected computer at home, students can easily access their grades for you to review with them. Please ask them to demonstrate this for you. If you are interested in having your own parent access, please come to the school office to get signed up along with a short tutorial.

Dress Code –
Please remember to send students to school in the appropriate school uniform. The main dress code violations have been:
– colored shoes (only black and white are allowed)
– no collared shirts
– black jeans are not allowed

Arriving on time to school –
We have had excessive tardies this school year. It is important for parents/guardian to understand that students can only have a maximum of 10 tardies per semester. Please review the Oakland Unity High student / parent handbook regarding the “tardy policy”. Students need to arrive by 08:10 am so they can be in their seats by 08:15 am sharp.

Cell phones / electronic devices –
We have confiscated a record number of cell phones this school year. Here are a few reminders regarding cell phones:
– phone use is strictly prohibited before, during, and after school
– cell phones must be turned completely off (not even on vibrate)
– phones must not be visible during the school day

We have phones in the main office for students to use in the event of an emergency. It is best if students keep cell phones safe at home.

Thank You,
David Castillo
